Ruth A Novel Volume 3 Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell Books
The "Dissenter" mindset and emphasis on shame, penance and the hypocrisy of society's judgment and restrictive mores are the gyst of this story. As with all of Gaskell's works that I've read, it is very moving and emotional but we could have gotten the same effect without all of the gut-wrenching exaggerations of Ruth's feelings of shame which I now realize is different than guilt in that shame comes from outside the person whereas guilt comes from the inside. The friendship between Mr. Bradshaw and Mr. Benson is beautifully highlighted and the intense moral struggles of each opened my eyes to the unique issues that men of strong character and values must sometimes deal with when making choices for the good of the people they are responsible for guiding. And Ruth's and her illegitimate son's unique relationship reflects a common bond and strength in the face of being shunned by society. This is not one of my favorite Gaskell works because of the excessive descriptive wordiness of the natural environment and Christian stream of "conscienceness" thinking but it is a great story and a must read for lovers of her works and those who want to grow through a book. And for readers who feel guilt or shame about something in their past, yes even in 2012 when almost anything goes, I believe they would be more self-forgiving after reading this because it's just not worth holding onto those feelings.
